Facebook & Myspace

I have had a myspace page for 2 years and Facebook page for just a few months. Initially, I thought I was too old for this sorda thing and it was complicated to make my page look as good as everyone else's. I enjoyed myspace but have to say I am more addicted to Facebook most recently. Facebook is a little easier and you do not have to make your page fancy to have fun. I have been able to reconnect with friends that I have talked to in more than 20 years and catch up with family memers. I am now able to look at pictures of their family and friends and read all about them at my convenient time. What a great concept. The more I get on it the more I want to find out about everyone and find out about who's not on their yet. I like that it has private settings, who knows how private it really is but I don't put stuff on there that people should not see. I have read books that I wouldn't have read and seen movies that I wouldn't have seen but because my friends or family was talking about them.

Crazy Weather

North Dakota is making sand bags to try to hold back the flooding. The red river is higher than it has been in 100 years. Here in Green Country we are going to reach 62 degrees today and expecting thunderstorms and hail this afternoon and evening. Temperatures are going to drop tomorrow and then we are expecting to get anywhere from 2" to 6" of snow on Friday night and Saturday. So get your shopping done now and buckle in for a crazy next few days.

Helpful Tips

Most of us these days have some type of water filter on our refrigerator right?? Well I do, and I hadn't changed it out the recommened every 6 months. When I walked into the kitchen this morning the tile was soaked with water. I instantly thought the worst because that's usually the case. It was just the gasket on the water filter and once I removed the filter, all was ok. So now I just have to buy a new filter and then mark my calendar so I don't forget next time. I think it had been about 18 months since I changed it. Ooops. I usually vacuum that front vent on the refrigerator a couple of times a year and thought that was sufficient. It definitely is not. Once I pulled the vent off, there were massive amounts of dust bunnies. You've heard the line, "what you don't know wont hurt ya", well I thought I was doing a good job and now I know. Also, I heard that if you don't rinse your lint filter every now and then on your dryer that it could cause a fire. It really happened to someone I knew. So I do that a couple times a year just to be sure I don't fall into that statistic.

Family Fun

Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) starts this Friday. I'm so excited. I can't seem to get enough of the Disney & Pixar movies. The wise people that make these movies always put funny stuff in their just for the parents so everyone gets a good laugh. I think Shrek is still one of my favorites. I have seen that at least 30 times. Monsters vs. Aliens has Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon as the main character voices. Kiefer said in an interview that he got the idea for the voice from his favorite cartoon growing up and it's a combo voice of Yosemite Sam & the Sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. I heard a little clip of it and viewed the trailer, he sounds amazing. I may actually be more excited about Monsters vs. Aliens than my boys. I know what I'm doing Friday night; I'm going to the movies w/my family for another family fun night and overpriced refreshments and snacks.

Making a Difference

The Vintage Babes are a group of ladies aged in their 60's, 70's, and beyond that try to make a difference in other people's live. They are a softball team and their motto is stay active and stay involved. The babes most recently made a trip to New Hope, a prison for women in Sun City, Florida and quickly became mentors to the women there. The Vintage Babes are determined to help change lives and say "better do this today, to be here tomorrow." We could learn a lot from them. The women incarcerated at New Hope said that it meant a lot for the vintage babes to come out to meet them, spend time with them and mentor them and that they were very thankful. Team USA

Felix Perez and American soldier spent over 4 years in the middle east serving his country. He grew up in New Jersey loving baseball. He was in attendance with his sister while Team USA beat Puerto Rico in a come back victory of 6-5. Most of the fans were for Puerto Rico but he proudly wore his red, white, and blue. He also brought with him an American Flag that he had while in the middle east. He asked the security guard if he might get an autograph. Little did he know he was about the experience the best 30 minutes of his life. He was invited back to celebrate with the team. His flag was with him during the worst moment of his life and passed around the room and signed by every player on the team. They also gave him an autographed ball. "We’re the U.S.,” Perez said. “This is our game. … This is the world. You’re representing your country. What is more honorable than representing your country?”

Felix was injured during the war and is now in a wheelchair but that couldn't keep him from smiling from ear to ear. He brought his flag home as a reminder and an amulet. The flag will undoubtedly never leave his heart.

Bail Out Criminals

Top O' the morning to ya! The big news story today is the crooks at AIG. All across the country, there are people who are working hard and meeting their responsibilities every single day, without the benefit of government bailouts or multimillion-dollar bonuses. There are a bunch of small-businesses who are struggling just to keep their credit line open. The bonuses paid to the traders was wrong, don't they know that? They are the tiny group of people who crafted the complicated deals that wound up shaking the world's economic foundations. Our financial sector will never heal unless the financial companies who helped create this economic crisis begin to regain the public trust. The actions of AIG do just the opposite, and every American is justified in their outrage at this breach of public trust. They should be in jail with Bernie Madoff if you ask me.

St. Paddy's Day

I was suprised to see how many people celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Canada, Australia, USA, New Zealand and of course Ireland celebrate this holiday every year. But did you know that the 1st recorded parade was in New York City? In 1762 Irish soldiers in the English army marched through the city with their music. The leprechaun is purely and American invention and has nothing to do with St. Patrick or the celebration. Ireland has a 5 day festival every year. Wearing a shamrock on one's clothing is a sign of Irish nationalism or loyalty to the Roman Catholic faith. St. Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish. I will be wearing my green tomorrow as I do not want to get pinched as is tradition. I am irish and have the freckles to prove it. Many others will be wearing green to join in the fun and celebration or simply because they wish they were irish, maybe just for a day.

Laughter at the wrong time

On the way in to the office this morning, I saw something that just cracked me up. A policeman had pulled someone over for speeding. As he was getting out of his car to walk up to hers, he gets pulled back. He had shut his own jacket in the door. It may not sound hillarious but it really was. It literally, yanked him back. He he he. Do you laugh when others fall down or do something embarrasing? I just can't help myself. So unless it's an elderly person or they get hurt, if someone does something embarrasing, I'm laughing. Everyone needs a good laugh every now and then. I, myself have fallen up the stairs before. When you fall the first thing you usually do if all you hurt is your pride is look to see if anyone saw your unfortunate accident and then you jump up real fast like it didn't happen right???

Snowy Day

Did you know that 5 of the biggest snow storms Tulsa has had were in March? I did not know that either. That is just craziness. All the Bradford Pear, Red Bud, & Dogwood trees are blooming. I hope they don't get too confused with this cold blast. They are so pretty to look at. I know last year my kiddos had to wear coats, hat, scarves, and gloves on Easter. I don't personally mind the snow or the cold; it's just the icey roads that scare me. It is my hope that we get enough snow for the kids to play in and go snow sledding.

Always Hope

I watched the Today show this morning and there was a remarkable story about hope. A 7-year old little girl named Heather had a tumor near her stomach. The tumor had been removed but just 9 months later it returned with a vengeance. Heather and her family were given very little hope and told that doctors would just try to treat her organs as they began to fail. They didn't give up hope and found a remarkable doctor. She had 6 vital organs removed to include her stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, small & large intestines. They removed the tumor and then replaced all of her organs w/the exception of her stomach, pancreas and spleen. Doctors had to create a pouch to replace her stomach and because she no longer has a pancreas she is effectively a diabetic. She is being nourished through a tube right now but will be able to resume a fairly normal diet. Medicine is so awesome. She is going to have a life and a fairly normal one which is vastly different than her prognosis just a few months ago. She was certainly hamming it up for the cameras. She couldn't wait to get home to play w/her older sister and her pet. I just love to hear heart warming stories like that.

Neighborly

I struggle sometimes to come up with something good to talk about each day when we seem to have a lot of doom and gloom. My mother-in-law was just telling me about this awesome story of a whole community in our area helping another family. A teenage girl in our community struggles with a seizure disorder and her community came together and rebuilt her family a home. I think she said a school teacher laid new tile in the kitchen. There are so many ways neighbors can get involved in their community and sometimes something as simple as a smile can make a person's day. If you have an elderly neighbor who doesn't have family nearby, maybe you could check on them on the cold days and make sure they have something warm to eat and have all of their medicines. I don't know. It's so refreshing to hear stories of people helping their friends and neighbors. Most people are short on cash and time but the smallest donation can make the biggest difference.

Idol Top 13

Last night was supposed to be the top 12 on American Idol. Simon surpised us all with the announcement that there would be a top 13 this year. I can't tell you all how happy I am that Tatiana did not make it through. She makes my skin crawl. There was one other contestant that I did not feel should be in there but the one I would replace them with probably would not have won it all so I guess I will get over it. I am still rooting for Danny Gokey. He's the one that looks like Robert Downey, Jr. I just love his voice. I would buy his cd in a heartbeat. That's how I just the contest. I don't care who has the best pipes or best sounding voice persay. I just vote for the one that, in my opinion, would make the best sounding cd....basically if I wouldn't by their cd, I wont vote for them. I can't wait till next week to see what they have in store for us. I hope they are not forced to sing really corny songs. It is an exciting time.

Lotter Winners

I couldn't forget to mention the New Jersey lottery winners. They are taking the cash now and will split 140 million between the 10 of them. It's the 2nd largest winning amount in the state. I am so happy for them. The group of 10 have been pitching in for years to win the lottery. The guy that usually bought the ticket for the group was in Florida at the time but said count him in. So he actually paid his $5.00 after the fact. I didn't hear about any squabbling at all. I'm glad they let him keep his share. I sure could live off of 14 million for the rest of my life. Who hasn't wondered what they would do if they won the big one? I think I would go on vacation somewhere fantastic first and then come up with a plan. You hear a lot about how that kind of money ruins people's lives. My wish is that it helps the winners and their families in more ways than they ever imagined.

March is here!

March is here. This is quite possibly my favorite month during the whole year. There is nothing prettier than driving around Tulsa and seeing all the trees and flowers in bloom. I personally recommend 41st & Lewis or 91st & Sheridan. If you have any other fantastic sites to see please let me know. I'm looking forward to visiting the Tulsa Zoo, going on bike rids with my boys, picnics at the park and throwing the ball with my sons. It also doesn't hurt that March madness is starting up too.

Spoilin' the fun

How many times has someone spoiled your fun? I don't know why kids or people feel the need but it happens all too often. My 6 yr old just lost another tooth and it was just his 3rd one so far. I've been waiting for all the fun things parents get to do with kids. There is an older neighbor kid that always wants to spoil the fun. He tells him that there is not a Santa Claus or a tooth fairy. Who does this sort of thing? When I feel my kid is old enough, I will tell him. It is not his place to tell my kid. I realize I can wish all I want, that some other kid might have done the same but it is always the same kid. I just wish parents would do a better job at teaching their kids to respect others and others wishes and belief systems.

Love after 80

Did anyone else hear about the couple that married after finding love on the internet? Wow. Both of the newlyweds were previously married for over 60 years and had their spouses pass on. They thought for sure that they would end up alone and then gave the matchmaking website a try. He is 87 and she is 85. They met on line and married after only talking and dating for 4 months and are the cutest couple. I am so happy for them. It just goes to show you that when you open your eyes to new possiblities and open your heart, anything is possible.
